Furley Page donation towards legal publications

We’d like to thank the Furley Page Foundation for its recent donation of £750 to help us purchase necessary legal publications. The annual cost to CHAC of subscribing to necessary legal resources is around £2,500, which for stretches the resources of a small charities providing advice, so any donations towards these resources are gratefully received and contributes towards maintaining our quality advice service preventing homelessness in the Canterbury district.

The Furley Page Foundation is the charitable arm of Kent solicitors Furley Page.

London Legal Walk raises over £500

On Monday 17 June CHAC trustees Viv Gambling, Nick Jackson and Nick Piska took part in the London Legal Support Trust’s annual fundraiser, the London Legal Walk, walking with over 15,000 other participants from the legal sector including judges from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. The event raises money for advice charities supported by LLST, like CHAC. TeamCHAC has so far raised over £500 (and nearly £700 once GiftAid is taken into account). And if you wanted to donate but haven’t yet done so, do not fear - it’s not too late to donate: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CHAC

We're (back) on the Twitter! @canterburyCHAC

CHAC on Twitter.jpg

Many many years ago we got ourselves a Twitter account, posted a single message and then literally forgot all about Twitter - we didn’t even know we had a Twitter account until our lovely consultants from Kent Business School on all things digital in the ‘modern world’ told us we had one (and that people had been doing something called ‘hashtagging’ CHAC!). So we found our way back into the account, dusted it off, worked out how it works, and now you can enjoy CHAC updates on what we’re up to, fundraising events, and housing advice and homelessness news simply by following us @canterburyCHAC.

Hot off the heals of the KM Bike Ride, which has so far raised an astonishing £1,055, TeamCHAC is back again - this time taking part in the London Legal Walk on 17 June. The walk is organised by the London Legal Support Trust which provides core funding to CHAC, as one of its Centres of Excellence, keeping our services free and independent. Is there hope on the horizon for tenants in the private-rented sector?

CHAC welcomes the government’s recent proposal to abolish section 21 notices – the procedure that private sector landlords commonly use to recover possession from a tenant, without having to give any reason. The government states that its proposal ‘will bring an end to private landlords uprooting tenants from their homes with as little as eight weeks’ notice after a fixed term contract has come to an end’.

Welcome to new trustee Sarah Slowe

We’re very happy to welcome Sarah Slowe to the management committee. Sarah has a lot of experience in funding applications, which (for better or worse) takes up a large amount of CHAC energy.

Sarah has previously joined Team CHAC for the KM Bike Ride, and now that she’s a member of the management committee she has got straight in there and joined Team CHAC (along with Nick Jackson, Kim Pegg and Rachael Massingham) for this year’s 50 km challenge: please sponsor the team here: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/TeamCHAC2019.

We’re very pleased to announce that CHAC’s advice service has been acknowledged with a Gerald Turley Recognition Award. The work undertaken by CHAC was “judged as exceptional”. We’d like to thank the judges and all those who nominated us.
