CHAC prevents man granted asylum from becoming homeless
A man who had been granted asylum was prevented from becoming homeless on the street thanks to early intervention by Canterbury Housing Advice Centre (CHAC).
The man, who had been asked to leave his accommodation, had made a homeless application to Canterbury City Council. Initially the Council said it was not prepared to provide him with interim (ie temporary) accommodation as it did not consider him to be in “priority need” ie to have conditions (whether physical and/or mental) which made him vulnerable.
How CHAC helped
After some discussion, the team at CHAC persuaded the Council that the man did have physical and mental conditions and was therefore vulnerable.
The outcome
The Council agreed to provide the man with accommodation whilst investigating his homeless application (to see if there might be an obligation to arrange permanent accommodation).
