Council Tax debt cleared for victim of domestic violence
Single parent Amanda accumulated a large Council Tax bill whilst recovering from an act of domestic violence.
Amanda had been living in a Canterbury City Council property with her dependent child when she was attacked by her partner.
After having to spend several months in hospital, Amanda did not initially feel well enough or safe enough to go home. Once her health improved, she was placed in temporary accommodation by the Council.
How we helped Amanda…
During this time, Amanda had accumulated a large Council Tax bill and turned to CHAC for help.
With the knowledge that Section 13(A) of the Local Government Finance Act 1992 gives a council the discretion to reduce a Council Tax bill to nil, we helped Amanda compile a request to the Council. We approached the specialist who had been treating Amanda, as well as her GP, for statements to be included in our request.
The result…
The Council agreed to Amanda’s request and wrote off her Council Tax debt which totalled almost £1700.
